Various studies have demonstrated the multiple beneficial properties of goji berries. In particular, they would improve many aspects of male reproduction.
The many benefits of goji berries
Goji berries (Lycium barbarum), also known as wolfberry berries or berries, have been used for more than 2,000 years in traditional Chinese medicine. Indeed, they are reputed to be one of the world’s richest nutrient foods. Their main active ingredient, polysaccharides (LBP = Lycium barbarum polysaccharide), allows them to improve the wellbeing and immune functions but also to protect the brain from neuronal diseases such as Alzheimer’s.They can act as an anti-inflammatory, have anti-viral and cardio-protective activity and also have proven anti-aging properties. Their use in therapies against different cancers has also been studied.
Goji berries and male reproduction
According to researchers from different universities in China and the United States, goji berries also have a positive impact on male reproduction by acting on many parameters: increased quality, quantity and mobility of sperm, improved sexual performance and protection of the testicles against toxic aggressions. This impact is mainly due to the antioxidant properties of LBPs and their ability to increase cell proliferation, an important phase of reproduction.
A study with mice found that LBP counteracted the effects of bisphenol A on the male genitalia. Mice injected with LBP and with bisphenol A disease had increased activity of SOD (Superoxide Dismutase) and GPx (Gluthatione Peroxidase), two enzymes that play antioxidant roles, while a drop in the level of MDA (Malondialdehyde), a marker of oxidative stress. Taking LBP would therefore protect against reproductive damage caused by bisphenol A.
Another study has found the benefits of LBP: following oral administration of LBP to rats, there was a clear increase in the number of their sexual intercourse and their frequency of ejaculation. In addition, LBPs provided a protective effect against heat damage to testicles and increased sex hormone levels in these rats.
Although more human studies are needed before confirming the positive effects of goji berries on male reproduction, it is certain that these fruits contain powerful antioxidants that counteract the harmful effects of oxidative stress on health.
